Review :
After flirting with musical interests with 2009's "The Princess and the Frog" and 2010’s "Tangled," Walt Disney Animation furthers the Broadway mood with "Frozen," which seems even more calculated to reignite the blockbuster energy that fueled studio hits from the late 1980s and early '90s. Filled with tunes and elaborate sequences, "Frozen" is Disney playing it safe, packing the film with adorable characters, broad villainy, and a marketable landscape of snow and ice. It's far from revolutionary work, but there's undeniable charm to be found in the movie, which features wonderful singing, dazzling animation, and some cheeky Nordic humor, helping to enliven what's often a disappointingly routine picture.

Long ago, sisters Elsa (Idina Menzel) and Anna (Kristen Bell) were close, but an accident involving Elsa's magical ice-conjuring powers left her younger sibling without a memory of their happy times together. Eventually orphaned, the girls have been raised separately, with hopes that Elsa's isolation will help to control her gift. About to be crowned queen of the land Arendelle in a summertime ceremony, Elsa prepares for her big day, while Anna finds romance with Hans (Santino Fontana).

Unfortunately, Elsa does not approve of the hasty pairing, and an argument with Anna pushes the nervous leader to accidentally unleash her fury, covering Arendelle in ice. Escaping into the mountains, Elsa plans to live in exile, free at last to live her life without fear of discovery. Anna, concerned for her estranged sister, follows her into the cold, finding help from Kristoff (Jonathan Groff), an unemployed ice dealer with a reindeer pal named Sven, and Olaf (Josh Gad), a living snowman who dreams of experiencing the delights of summertime.

Inspired by the Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale, "The Snow Queen," "Frozen" has been exhaustively Disneyfied for its big screen debut. Directors Jennifer Lee (who also wrote the script) and Chris Buck have transformed the original work into a musical along the lines of "Beauty and the Beast" and "Aladdin," reaching back into the studio vaults for song and dance inspiration. Considering the film's marketing is largely concentrated on the comedic aspects of the story, it's a bit of a surprise to find "Frozen" a full-fledged musical, with characters pouring their hearts out in various numbers that explore the attitude divide between Elsa and Anna ("For the First Time in Forever"), the rush of finding a soul mate ("Love is an Open Door"), Elsa's snowbound liberation ("Let it Go"), and Olaf's sunny day envy ("In Summer"). Song quality ranges from rudimentary to truly soaring, but what's consistent here is the singing, with Menzel proving herself to be a mighty weapon for the picture, capturing emotional nuance while belting out the hits with precision. Her vocal input single-handedly breathes life into the feature's sometimes static sense of spectacle.

The fairy tale aspects of "Frozen" are less convincing, tied into a story with magical elements that aren't explained to satisfaction, requiring the audience to go with the flow as the plot inspects Elsa's powers, Kristoff's adoptive troll family, and the saga of Olaf, who doesn't have a logical place in the tale. The snowman has little to add to Anna's quest, only here to qualify for Disney's cute sidekick requirement, with Olaf's slapstick sequences built around his repeated sectional separation and general dim-wittedness. Actually, most of "Frozen" is mummified by studio formula, with blustery antagonists and animal companionship (Sven's been bestowed with canine characteristics for maximum adorableness) matching previous efforts (moments of the film are shockingly similar to antics found in "Tangled"), leaving little surprise to material that seems perfectly capable of producing such excitement. Instead of discovering its own identity, "Frozen" plays it safe, keeping the feature oddly earthbound as it reaches for fantasy highlights.

Stunning is the animation, which explores the Nordic setting with CG liveliness, exposing the glassy beauty of ice and the crunchy feel of a frosted wonderland. Character designs are also pleasingly elastic and expressive, finding Anna's restless behaviors amusing to watch. The screenplay's sense of humor leans toward the crude (boogers and butts are common topics), but the writing does establish that snow is a curse and lutefisk is a treat, making Minnesota perhaps the most ideal state to view the movie in. "Frozen" certainly has its charms, and those slavish to the Disney formula will walk away with a belly full of heartwarming resolutions and toe-tapping tunes, but on the spectrum of creative ambition, the feature ranks disappointingly low.
